About Stephanie EatonLeader of the Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrat Council Group
Stephanie Eaton leads the Liberal Democrat group of councillors on Tower Hamlets Council. Since becoming a Councillor, Stephanie has argued passionately for increased respite care for the families of disabled children, improvements in youth justice, and greater provision of Mother tongue and English language and adult education classes. While Chair of the Health Scrutiny panel she undertook a review of measures to encourage people to stop smoking and using tobacco and last year she led a review into end of life care in the borough. With her Liberal Democrat colleagues Stephanie has called for improvements in the management of recycling in Tower Hamlets and greater protection of the Borough's unique historic buildings and archives. Outside of her political role, Stephanie is an academic criminologist. In her work she looks at the way our society responds to crime and deviant behaviour. Stephanie has a particular interest in sentencing and punishment; she wrote her PhD thesis on the incapacitation of dangerous offenders. Currently she works on the institutional processes for the scrutiny of criminal justice agencies and ways to make CCTV systems more robust, reactive and ethically sensitive. Both areas have significant implications for public safety and for criminal justice policy. A committed Liberal Democrat, Stephanie is passionate about social justice, the environment, and involving local people in the decisions that affect their lives. She aims to place Liberal Democrat concerns at the forefront of Tower Hamlets Council decisions.
